The Ukrainian Nuclear Forum Association presents an analytical report titled “Nuclear Hydrogen - A Path to Decarbonization and Energy Security for Ukraine,” which examines all aspects of nuclear hydrogen production and provides recommendations for implementing a hydrogen economy in Ukraine.
The report includes the following sections:
• Hydrogen Today and in the Future
• Nuclear Energy in the Hydrogen Economy
• Cost Estimates for Clean Hydrogen Production
• Hybrid Energy Systems Based on the Synergy of Nuclear and Renewable Energy
• Nuclear Hydrogen for Ukraine: Recommendations for Implementing a Nuclear Hydrogen Economy
Each section of the report is illustrated with diagrams, figures, tables, and references to relevant international reports and documents.
The report emphasizes that Ukraine has a well-developed infrastructure for implementing nuclear technologies and operating nuclear facilities. Currently, about 140,000 highly qualified employees work in the nuclear energy sector. Nuclear industrial complex enterprises can be engaged at all technological stages of hydrogen production. Implementing nuclear hydrogen production technologies will contribute to creating thousands of additional jobs, and the existing potential of Ukraine’s nuclear industrial complex will support the rapid adoption of nuclear hydrogen, ensuring the country’s energy independence and security.
The main recommendation of the report is to classify hydrogen produced through nuclear technologies as clean hydrogen, whose production does not result in harmful emissions that impact the environment. This classification is also advocated by the European Nuclear Association FORATOM, of which the Ukrainian Nuclear Forum has been a member since 2011.
